This painting was surely made for Renoir’s patron, the French diplomat and banker Paul Berard, who owned a chateau at Wargemont in Normandy. Renoir was a guest at Berard’s estate numerous times and painted this still life while vacationing there in the summer of 1881. He exhibited it in the seventh Impressionist exhibition the following spring.
